Plaza de España, a must-see in Seville

The Plaza de España of Seville is one of the most beautiful and iconic landmarks in the city. This massive semi-circular square was built for the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929 and is an excellent example of Regionalist architecture. The plaza is located in the famous Maria Luisa Park and has become one of the most visited places in Seville.

The Plaza de España is an architectural masterpiece that combines the so called traditional (neo) Mudejar style of Andalusia with elements of Renaissance Revival art, designed by Sevillian architect, Aníbal González. The entire structure is built in brick and decorated with beautiful tiles that depict scenes from Spanish history and culture. The plaza has a diameter of 200 meters and is flanked by two beautiful towers of 74 meters tall, on each side.

The central feature of the plaza is a large fountain, which is surrounded by a moat that visitors can cross using one of the four bridges. The four bridges symbolize the four original Spanish kingdoms (and crowns) of Navarra, Leon, Castilla, and Aragon. The beautiful canal can also be explored by renting a small boat.

One of the most impressive features of the plaza is the intricate and colorful tile work that covers most of its surfaces. Many of the tiles were produced by the famous ceramic factory Manuel Ramos Rejano from Triana, and they depict scenes from Spanish history and culture, representing the provinces of Spain in alphabetical order. The tiles are set in beautiful mosaic patterns that add to the visual appeal of the plaza.

The Plaza de España is also home to several government offices, including the Regional Military Headquarters and the regional delegations of the Government of Spain. The plaza is open to the public, and visitors can stroll around its semi-circular walkway, enjoy a picnic in the park, or simply relax and take in the beautiful surroundings.

In addition to being a popular tourist attraction, the Plaza de España has also been used as a filming location for several famous movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. The plaza has become an icon of Seville and is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting the city.
